Concrete is unforgiving to estimate: cubic yards are only the start, and the money is usually won or lost in formwork contact area, rebar weight, finishing, and placement logistics. What a concrete takeoff includes
- Foundations — spread and continuous footings, grade beams, piers and pile caps, by volume with formwork edge area
- Slabs — slab-on-grade and elevated decks by area, thickness and mix, with vapor barrier, base and edge forms; composite deck pours coordinated with the steel scope
- Walls — foundation, retaining and shear walls with two-sided formwork contact area, bulkheads and blockouts
- Columns, beams and stairs — formed volume plus form complexity noted where it drives labor
- Reinforcement — rebar by size and weight from schedules or typical details, welded wire, chairs and accessories; embeds and anchor bolts coordinated with Div 5
- Finishing and curing — finish types by area, joints (saw-cut, expansion, construction), sealers and curing compounds
Quantities are organized by CSI Division 3 and by pour or area where the drawings support it, with mix designs and assumptions stated so pricing can track actual supplier quotes.
From quantities to a bid number
For full estimates we extend quantities against material pricing, crew productivity and equipment (pump time, finishing equipment), and keep labor visible separately — which matters on New Jersey and New York public work, where placement and finishing labor must be priced to the applicable prevailing-wage determination (see the New Jersey and New York pages). For buyout, our material procurement service can take the same quantities into supplier quotations — including concrete and masonry materials such as ready-mix and rebar.

Frequently asked questions
Do you quantify formwork or just concrete volume?
Both. Formwork is measured as contact area by element type, because that — not cubic yards — is where most of the labor lives. Reuse assumptions are stated.
How is rebar handled if there are no bar schedules?
Where schedules exist we take off from them; where only typical details exist, weight is developed from the details with the basis documented, so the number can be trued up when shop drawings arrive.
Can you split the estimate by pour or phase?
Yes — by pour, level, building, area or bid-form line item, whichever matches how you plan and buy the work.
Do you handle both structural and site concrete?
Yes — site concrete (curb, gutter, sidewalk, pads) can be carried in the concrete estimate or in the sitework scope, whichever fits your bid structure; we keep the boundary explicit either way.
