What we quantify in a steel takeoff
- Structural framing — beams, columns, girders and braces listed by shape, size, grade and length, extended to weight by member and totaled by sequence or area
- Joists and joist girders — by designation and span, with bridging
- Metal deck — roof and composite floor deck by profile, gauge and finish, with closure and accessory allowances
- Connections — detail-material and connection allowances stated explicitly (percentage or detailed, per your preference), never buried
- Anchor bolts, base plates and embeds — counted and separated by supplier scope
- Miscellaneous metals — stairs, rails, ladders, lintels, edge angles and support frames, kept in a separate Div 5 bucket so they can be bid or bought separately

What documents do you need for a steel takeoff?
Structural drawings (framing plans, sections, details, general notes) and specifications. Architectural drawings help capture misc metals; if erection drawings or a fabricator's advance bill exist, we reconcile against them.
How are connections handled?
Your choice: a stated detail-material allowance by member class, or itemized connection material where the details are developed enough to support it. Either way the basis is written into the deliverable — not hidden in the totals.
Do you separate fabrication and erection scope?
Yes. Supply, shop labor, coatings, freight and erection are kept as separate elements so fabricators, erectors and GCs can each pull the part of the number they own.
