Construction drawing reading guide

Start with the cover sheet, drawing index and general notes. Confirm discipline prefixes, scales and revision dates; then trace the work from plans to elevations, sections, details and schedules. Cross-check architectural, structural, civil and MEP sheets, and read specifications alongside the drawings. Record conflicts as clarifications rather than silently choosing one interpretation.

Quantity takeoff fundamentals

Define the scope before measuring. Use consistent units such as SF, LF, SY, CY, EA, TON and LS; separate assemblies by type, size and location; apply waste only when appropriate; and keep marked plans tied to the quantity workbook. Document inclusions, exclusions and addenda so another reviewer can reproduce the result.

Cost estimating fundamentals

A useful estimate connects quantities to labor productivity, material pricing, equipment, subcontractor quotes, general conditions, overhead and profit. Escalation and contingency should be visible assumptions—not hidden markups. Pricing must reflect project location, wage requirements, schedule, access and the maturity of the documents.

Read the invitation, instructions to bidders and bid form first. Build a deadline checklist for alternates, allowances, unit prices, bonds, addenda and required attachments. Bluebeam is effective for calibrated PDF measurement and markups; PlanSwift and OST support trade assemblies and quantity organization. Software improves speed and auditability, but it does not replace scope judgment, specification review, scale verification, revision control or an independent quality check.
